Papay, Atlantic Edge
Atmosphere created by recordings made whilst Artist in Residence during the 2018 ØY Festival, Papa Westray. Orkney.
I spent three glorious days on Papa Westray - distilling island life into bio music, found sound and ambient soundscapes.
One of our mixes bringing the wide open spaces to folk that can't get there right now. A warm welcome awaits when we're on the other side of #Coronavirus but meantime, enjoy making your own mix of the sounds of Papa Westray, home of the world's shortest scheduled air link.
The bell at St Anne's Kirk lies just inland from the Kelp Store pier where Edwin Muir’s splendid poem 'Childhood', narrated by Alan Davidson, was recorded.
Gatesong is an amalgam of wind playing through a galvanised five-bar gate with the occasional twang of a stock fence.
The seal colony can be heard from Moclett Pier along with the ubiquitous Geese - in this case recorded at the loch of St Tredwell.
Finally, the quern stone (grain milling) was recorded in situ at the Knap of Howar - Northern Europe’s oldest standing stone building.
